Place chocolate and butter in top of double boiler over boiling water.
Once this melts, remove top of double boiler and put cover on boiling water. Stir into chocolate mixture salt, confectioner’s sugar, and enough milk (or cream) so that frosting runs from spoon, but piles up in pan.
Add vanilla. Place top of double boiler back over simmering water, cover, and leave for 10-15min to take away raw taste of sugar.
Remove top of double boiler to cooling rack and allow to cool.
